Chris, I have always loved your rig. When I was out with Bill last year you drove by us while we were on the road and I said "Hey there just went that HOT flat bed from the RCIA site."

Any truck that is rated for over 10,000lbs or has a combined rate of over 10,000lbs (meaning truck and trailer combined rate) is required to be DOT registered.

Some states require it for any commercial vehicle. In Florida you have to be over 22,000 lbs or be carrying haz mats.

So i think i might need one becuase my trailer is about 6000 loaded and then theres my f250. So would i be under or over?
Chris Gunther said
Jan 17, 2012
You'll have to check with NJDOT. It looks like you don't need a USDOT#. If NJ requires it for over 10,000lbs, then you'll need one. An F250 is rated for just under 10,000lbs, and a dual axle trailer is rated at a minimum of 7,000lbs (maybe more depending on the axles you have under it).

Careful what you say... I've thought about selling it and buying a 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive. Two 3/4 ton gas burners can be hard on a guy.
Of course, considering what I paid for it in 04 and what it's worth now I may just keep it forever.

I am actually looking into selling fully rigged SoftWash Systems trucks rigged from used trucks in the $7,500 - $10,000 range.
I see all these nice looking rigs , very nice , but I also see tanks that look to be bigger than 100 gallons . I inquired with the a dot inspector last year and he basically told me its not how much SH you are carrying its your capacity , he also said it doesnt matter it its mixed at 2% or its 15% anything over 1000 lbs requires placards , and a cdl with hazmat . I asked him if I was on site with a 250 gallon tank would that still apply , his answer was yes as long as the tank was on a tagged motor vehicle . I run 2 fifty gallon tanks just to play it safe . ( I have a cdl with hazmat I cant claim I didnt know) . Has anybody been stopped for violating the hazmat law.

We stop at all open scales and have been pulled aside for a walk around inspection several times. We have never had a violation.

The truck pictured above was built mainly for commercial use, it is driven by a former bleach truck driver who has full hazmat license certs. That is the reason for the 225 and 100 gallon tanks .

This is my Fatboy skid setup. It's pretty basic, but has been an extremely cost effective way to get into business. I've made some modifications such as the union before the hose reel. It allows me to bypass the reel when putting SH in my mix tank and for aggitating the mix. I installed a charging relay that I picked up at Boater's World and it has been a great addition (beats running a trickle charger from the house).
This skid, minus the ladders, set me back about $3k which I made back on three jobs this weekend. I'm amazed at the possible margins in this business, especially with such a low barrier of entry. AC's products are the real deal!
Great way to amp up Bob's GREAT Fat Boy Bandit system and augment it with a skid and ladder rack. You stay in the GREEN and dont settle for debt. A SoftWash Systems Cradle Skid should be earned and not purchased with debt if at all possible. You do what you need to do to get profitable. Bob's system is awesome and is a SOLID start.

Thanks AC, I've taken a lot away from this forum. I also enjoy reading positive comments over here, not the typical negativity and back and forth like some of the other forums.
Mark, the black fitting in the third picture is a union that allows me to bypass the hose reel when filling my mix tank or agitating the mix. You have the fatboy setup, what are you doing now to put SH in your mix tank?
The charger is from Blue Sea Systems, you can pick it up at a West Marine if you have one nearby. The wiring diagram is pretty self-explanatory. Hope this helps.

Thanks Woody,
Yes, I have the FatBoy system and I either have my supply company pump the SH directly into my mix tank (I only have one tank so far) or I'll take additional 5ers with me and pour them into the tank if I will not be passing close to the supply store latter that day or if it's a Saturday job.
I don't like to work Saturdays except for the fact that more homeowners are home in the neighborhoods, working in their yards, and are apt to be curious about what I'm doing. Opens up a great Q&A time with them.
Where did you pick up that union? From Bob?
Zach Maynard said

Looks good Woody, we use a quick connect in the same fashion. Then we can hook up a whip line to add to the tank or agitate.
